Spring Home Maintenance Checklist - Twin Cities NW Metro Life

Spring Home Maintenance Checklist

Hello Twin Cities NW Metro! After another long Minnesota winter, spring is the perfect time to walk through your home and yard and take stock of what the cold left behind. A little attention now can prevent bigger headaches — and bigger bills — down the road.

Here’s your essential spring home maintenance checklist — tailored for Minnesota homeowners.

Exterior Maintenance

Inspect your roof Look for missing or lifted shingles, damaged flashing, or areas that took a beating from ice and snow. Binoculars work great if you’d rather keep your feet on the ground. Small issues caught now are much cheaper than leaks later.

Clean gutters and downspouts Spring rain needs somewhere to go. Clear out any debris that collected over winter and make sure downspouts are attached and directing water away from your foundation.

Check siding, caulk, and trim Walk the perimeter and look for cracks, peeling paint, or caulk that pulled away during the freeze-thaw cycle. Seal up any gaps before summer heat sets in.

Inspect your driveway and walkways Minnesota winters are hard on concrete. Fill any cracks before they expand and become a bigger repair.

Check window and door weatherstripping Replace anything that’s cracked or worn. It’ll pay off when you’re running the air conditioning this summer.

Interior Maintenance

Replace your furnace filter If you haven’t swapped it recently, spring is a great reminder. A clean filter also helps when you switch over to cooling season.

Schedule your AC tune-up HVAC techs in the NW Metro fill up fast in April and May — don’t wait until the first hot week to call.

Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors Twice a year is the recommendation. Spring is the perfect time for fresh batteries and a quick test.

Check for water damage Look under sinks, around water heaters, and along basement walls for any signs of moisture or leaks that developed over winter.

Clean your dryer vent A clogged dryer vent is a fire hazard. Add it to your spring list and do it again in the fall.

Yard & Garage

Rake and dethatch your lawn Matted grass from snow cover can smother new growth. A good rake-out lets your lawn breathe and green up faster.

Trim trees and shrubs Cut back any dead branches and anything that may have been damaged over winter. Make sure no branches are touching your roofline or siding.

Get your irrigation system turned on Sprinkler companies book up quickly in spring — call early to get on the schedule before the rush.

Pull out and prep lawn equipment Check your mower blades, add fresh gas, and make sure everything is ready to go before the grass takes off.

Clean and organize your garage Swap out the snow gear for the lawn and garden tools. It makes everything a little easier on a busy Saturday morning.
