Standing Together as a Community: How We Can Support Each Other in a Tough Time

If you are like me, you have been watching national and local news closely as events unfold involving federal immigration operations in Minneapolis and the surrounding areas, and we have seen several local businesses currently shut down as a result.

Recent incidents have stirred deep emotions and sparked conversation (and discourse) throughout our communities. I have personally made the mistake of engaging with friends and strangers on social media, which is not very helpful or constructive.

This moment feels heavy, but it’s also an opportunity for us to think and act as a community that cares for one another, supports local places, and looks out for our neighbors.

Here’s how we can do that — positively and constructively.

Have Real Conversations

Many Minnesotans are talking about what’s happening, and for good reason. These events involve real people, and they touch emotions deeply. It’s okay for conversations to reflect that shared concern.

Focus on empathy over sharp division:

  • Listening to each other
  • Staying calm and compassionate
  • Keeping conversations and tone respectful

Support local Businesses

Local businesses are more than places to shop — they’re where relationships are built and community thrives. In times when people feel unsettled, these small, everyday places offer stability and connection.

Here’s how you can help keep the local economy strong:

1. Grab a Coffee or Beer With a Friend

There’s nothing like warm conversations over a latte to lift spirits — and when you do that at a locally owned coffee shop or brewery you’re also directly supporting small business owners and employees who live and work right here.

2. Eat Local

Whether it’s takeout pizza or a fun meal with your kids, choosing locally owned restaurants keeps revenue in our community and supports our neighbors.

3. Shop Local Goods & Services

From boutiques to service providers, every local dollar goes further here than you might think. When we choose to support neighbors, especially those most effected, it fosters local stability, pride, and connection.

Community Comes First

Here are a few other ways to support your local community:

  • Donate to a local food shelf such as Cross Services in Rogers
  • Reach out to a neighbor that you think may need your help.
  • Contact a local school or church to see if they are collecting items.
  • Call or email your local representatives to let them know your views.

The NW Metro has always been a place where people watch out for one another. That’s something we can lean on now — and every day.
